THE THREE SONS and THEIR LINES

THE THREE SONS and THEIR LINES

The Line of Thomas Gwaltney

The third generation Thomas had two sons, John and Thomas Jr.

John left Surry Co. and migrated into Brunswick Co. VA and then on into the Brushy Creek Mountain area of western North Carolina. His oldest son William apparently stayed in the Brunswick County, Virginia area while fifth generation sons Robert, Benjamin, John Jr., Nathaniel, Jehu, and Isaac were raised in North Carolina. (Alexander Co. area). Benjamin eventually migrated with his wife into the Natchez, Mississippi area where he was tragically killed when a tree fell on him. Jehu moved into the Talbot County, Georgia area, and Isaac Gwaltney ended up in Nova Scotia, Canada. It seems Isaac Gwaltney must have been a British sympathizer (Tory) during the Revolutionary War and then moved to Canada after the Americans won the war. I suppose the Tories didn't know how well they'd be received in the new nation. Robert, Nathaniel, and John Jr. stayed in North Carolina.

Most of William's descendents stayed in the Mecklenberg Co. VA area or went into the Botetourt Co/Roanoke, VA area.

*************************
Third generation Thomas' son Thomas Gwaltney Jr. ended up migrating from the Surry Co. area into Pitt Co. NC. He had sons fifth generation sons William, Thomas, Benjamin and John.

John then migrated into Posey County, Indiana and the result is a substantial number of Gwaltneys in the southest Indiana/southeast Illinois area today.

The Line of John Gwaltney

This is definitely the Virginia Gwaltney's line. Third Generation John Gwaltney had fourth generation sons Joseph, John Jr., Thomas, William, Benjamin, and James.

**Joseph apparently did not marry nor have children because neither wife nor children are mentioned in his will.

**While John jr. stayed in Virginia and had quite a few children, several older sons of John Jr. eventually migrated into Smith Co., Tennessee. I find this interesting because none of these older sons actually ended up with his inheritance. It seems the boys were willing to allow their sisters and a younger brother Thomas to have the family inheritance while they went off to Tennessee to start new lives. Through the young son Thomas, part of John Jr.'s line stayed in Virginia.

**As for the fourth generation son William, I have no record of offspring.

**Fourth generation son Benjamin also had a son named Benjamin. But this boy apparently did not marrried or have children, because his sister Elizabeth received everything in his will.

**Fourth generation son Thomas had a bunch of children through his two marriages. In fact, many of the Gwaltneys who live in Surry County, Virginia today and who live in rural Isle of Wight County as farmers tend to come from this line.

**Fourth generation son James Gwaltney also had a number of children whose offspring live in Isle of Wight County today for the most part. His fifth generation sons James, Simmons, John, Jordan, and Henry stayed put, whereas son Josiah and his wife migrated into the Ohio area near Cincinnatti. Josiah's offspring stayed in Ohio with the exception of one son who made his way into Spencer County, Indiana. From this line of Virginia Gwaltneys we come across several respected ministers of the late 1700's and into the mid 1800's: Rev. John S. Gwaltney, his son James Lancaster Gwaltney and then the next generation Luther Gwaltney who became president of Shorter College in Georgia and Judson Female Institute in Marion, Alabama. Also from this line we will find Pembroke Decautur (P.D.) Gwaltney whose family will heavily influence the town of Smithfield, Virginia with its peanut and later meat packing industry.

SOME OTHER GWALTNEYS FROM THIS LINE INCLUDE: Dawson David Gwaltney, Elias Gwaltney, Fielding Elijah Gwaltney, Samuel Gwaltney, Willis P. Gwaltney, 2 different William O.P. Gwaltneys, John C. Randolph Gwaltney,
Thomas Pointer Gwaltney,Ludwell Gwaltney, James Lancaster Gwaltney, Luther Calvin (Rice) Gwaltney, John Ryland Gwaltney, Joseph Jenkins Gwaltney, Col. Benjamin Gwaltney, William Atwill Gwaltney, William Gray Gwaltney, William Dudley Gwaltney,Josiah Gwaltney, Josiah Jackson Gwaltney, John Moore Gwaltney, Aquilla Durham Gwaltney.

The Line of William Gwaltney

As I mentioned on the previous page, I do not have much information on this line. There has been little support to show much existence of this line other than one strand which went down through Richard Gwaltney who has some offspring left today. Those who came from this line included William, Thomas McKim, and Allie Fitzhugh.
