Josiah Jackson Gwaltney, a founding father of Midway, Indiana
While most of the Gwaltneys who came to Indiana had come from North Carolina before settling in Posey County and then spread west into Illinois, the family of Josiah Jackson Gwaltney had come from the Cincinatti, Ohio area (originally a predecessor, Josiah Gwaltney had migrated to Ohio from Virginia) and then settled in the Spencer County, Indiana area. Josiah Jackson Gwaltney was essentially a founding father of Midway, Indiana (and for a couple of generations, there was a substantial number of Gwaltneys in Midway). Eventually, though, the Gwaltney sons did not either marry or if they married they had no children or else begat daughters. From my understanding, I don't think there are any Gwaltneys from Josiah Jackson Gwaltney's line left in the Midway area, only descendents of this man. What began as a mighty Gwaltney presence in the area is now but a whisper of the past.
